Who we Help, and Why we do it
Our passion is to provide a better quality of life for Seniors. We understand that not all Seniors are fortunate enough to be in the position to choose the Amica lifestyle, yet all certainly do deserve to receive the caring, respect and small gestures of support when they may need it most.
The numbers of Seniors living below the poverty line in Canada is growing. A very high percentage of older single Canadians live on less than $20,000 annually. Our year–round initiatives support and enhance the lives of these Seniors. HELPING HANDS started out as a small, local initiative by Amica staff, and has grown into a full registered charity, touching the lives and hearts of Seniors across the country.
The HELPING HANDS inaugural program was to deliver holiday baskets to support the independence, wellness and vitality of the seniors in need who receive our gifts. The Holiday Basket Campaign remains an annual initiative. We receive touching and heartfelt notes of thanks from many who felt they had been forgotten. The Baskets are full of treats, nutritious food items, toiletries, warm clothing and a gift certificate to a local grocery store. Other initiatives have included Golf Tournaments, Dinners and many fun–filled local events. To date, HELPING HANDS has raised over $600,000 and delivered over 6000 baskets in the six years since the program began. The generosity of many allows us to continue our mission further than we ever dreamt possible in those early days, when our goal had simply been to help those who were often forgotten during the holidays. It is a cause that is very dear to our hearts!
Our intent is to continue to grow our HELPING HANDS Community Program so that we can touch the lives of more seniors in need. We depend on your support to help us, and there are many ways to become involved in this unique and worthwhile charity.
Be it participation in our key fundraising initiatives throughout the year and at local Amica communities, or through cash donations, you too can Lend a Hand.
Thank you.
