Hank’s Plan for Independent Living
Hank is a retired veteran who fought in WW2. He chose our Independent Living option particularly for the meals and the convenience of having social and fitness activities right at home, as he recovers from knee surgery.
SOCIAL
- Most days, Hank attends an activity and he especially likes anything musical
- He often plays chess with friends in the games room
- On Hank’s 90th birthday his family booked our lounge and held a big celebration
- On Remembrance Day we drive Hank to the cenotaph to attend the service and lay a wreath
INTELLECTUAL
- Hank enjoys our Brain Booster activities including Trivia and Jeopardy nights
- He is an avid reader and member of our book club
- Hank is a great speaker and he is sometimes featured in our activity calendar to share his war experiences with residents, visitors, and local students
PHYSICAL
- We wake Hank at 8:30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays as he doesn’t want to miss the 9am strength class
- Hank likes black coffee with ginger cookies, so we make sure he is well-supplied while recovering
- Hank has achieved and maintained his desired weight through improved diet and exercise
CARE & SUPPORT
- Our Nurse monitors Hank’s health and keeps his doctor informed of his progress
- We provide medication in the privacy of his suite. It is very important to get the dose and frequency right to minimize pain from surgery
- We manage and order all medications through our selected provider
- We apply ice packs three times a day
- Our Nurse cleanses the wound and changes the dressing daily
- Physiotherapy visits three times a week
- We arrange for weekly blood work in his suite
Maggie’s Plan for Assisted Living
Maggie’s a mother and a grandmother. She was married for many years to her loving husband George who passed away five years ago. Maggie came to live with us for a more enriched lifestyle and to get the support she needs with arthritis and diabetes.
SOCIAL
- Maggie enjoys breakfast in the dining room with her friends Janet and Audrey
- She enjoys group outings, especially for theatre
- In the evenings she often plays cards with friends
- On Sundays she goes to a local church service on our On-The-Go bus
- She likes to Skype or FaceTime with her grandchildren and we assist when needed
INTELLECTUAL
- Maggie is a member of our Bridge Club
- Maggie leads the News and Views Club
- She often participates in our TED Talks series showcasing video speakers on themes from technology, entertainment and design
PHYSICAL
- On Tuesdays she gets her hair and nails done at the on-site beauty salon
- She participates in our Gentle Seated Yoga program twice a week
- Maggie enjoys daily walks with the Walking Club
CARE & SUPPORT
- Maggie likes to get up at 7am. She picks out her own clothes but needs assistance with zippers, buttons and jewellery
- She is on a low sodium diet and our Chef adapts the menu accordingly
- A Certified Team Member administers all medication as ordered by Maggie’s physician. She has periodic pain in her hands and knees and sometimes needs a prescribed pain relief medication
- Maggie likes to take a short, quiet nap before dinner in her chair with her favourite blanket. We fold her quilt and lay it on the top of her chair during our daily room tidy
Gloria’s Plan for Memory Care
Gloria is a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She’s close to her daughter and her son who have joined our Family Support Program. Gloria came to live with us when she could no longer live alone safely due to Alzheimer’s Disease.
SOCIAL
- Gloria loves music, especially country music and line dancing, which we often do in the afternoon
- She continues to bake in our cooking classes and loves being in the dining room
- Her two children visit often. We have coached them on how to work with Gloria using her “My Life Story Box”
INTELLECTUAL
- She enjoys sitting with a Team Member and looking at her ”My Life Story Book”
- Gloria’s daughter helped us create a special Sensory Activity Kit with cookbooks, recipe cards, pictures and thank you notes. They plan get-togethers using the kit
- She has a Shadow Box located outside of her suite. Her family has customized the box with personal photos and a cooking award she won. This helps her feel at home and helps her locate her suite
PHYSICAL
- Doing activities like folding laundry, watering plants, setting the table or sorting items helps Gloria relax
- She is a great knitter and contributes scarves to the Amica Helping Hands charity
CARE & SUPPORT
- Gloria dresses independently. She takes pride in her appearance and never leaves her room without applying lipstick
- She has her hair done and gets a manicure once a week in our on-site beauty salon
- Gloria has a personal need to help with meals. She helps set the table, which is key to her enjoying a meal
- On Wednesday evenings Gloria enjoys a spa bath. A team member draws the water, prepares the room, and assists with bathing. Afterwards we serve her chamomile tea
- A Certified Team Member administers all medication ordered by Gloria’s physician. Gloria asks what each pill is for and we explain
- She can move around on her own but Team Members need to monitor for limping or other expressions of fatigue such as pain
