A. Frank Walsh

A. Frank Walsh

Husband of Helen Walsh, Amica at Whitby

Canadian Navy – Served 4 ½ years

Frank served as a CPO Engineer in the Canadian Navy. He trained in London, Ontario; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Newfoundland; and in Esquimalt, British Columbia.

Frank served 4 ½ years, with his last 2 years based out of Londonderry, Ireland. While on the “New Glasgow” Atlantic Star, Frank looked after escorting convoys to Londonderry, looking for U-boats and keeping the convoys safe. During this time, his boat encountered the last German U-boat. The Government of the Netherlands awarded Frank and his mates a citation and boxes of tulip bulbs – their way of saying “thanks.”

Frank returned home to Canada in 1945
