During World War II, Garnet was a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), where he flew single and twin engine planes.
Garnet trained in Brandon, Manitoba; Montreal, Quebec; Victoriaville, Quebec; Moncton, New Brunswick; Weyburn, Saskatchewan; and Brantford, Ontario. He served 3 ½ years in Trois- Rivières, Quebec; Mountain View, Ontario; Bournemouth, England; and Paignton, England.
Returning home in 1946, Garnet was a teacher and later a professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto.
