Harold Staffen

Amica at London

Royal Canadian Air Force – #419 and 428 Squadrons

Harold was a Corporal in the Air Force, Squadrons 419 and 428. Responsible for the safety equipment for the Lancasters and the Halifaxes, Harold completed his training in Lachine, Quebec and Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was stationed in Middleton St. George in the County Durham, England.

A bombing raid was almost cancelled when the Tail Gunner was ill. PO Andrew Mynarski volunteered to replace him. The plane was shot down over Germany and Mynarski took over the controls to allow the crew to jump. Mynarski was killed and received the Victoria Cross for his actions. Harold remembers handing Mynarski his parachute before the take off.

He returned home in April 1946.
