As a Sergeant in the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, James trained in England and Scotland and served for 2 ½ years.
James went in on D-Day and 2 ½ months later his forearm was blown off by a mine in France. Returning to Canada in 1944 for therapy, James was fitted with an artificial hand.
James received numerous medals, his most special one coming from France – the Legion of Honour, France’s highest recognition. Only 30 people in Canada have received this prestigious medal.
