Joseph Oiffer

Joseph Oiffer

Amica at Thornhill

Canadian Army – Royal Canadian Regiment

Joseph was a Private in the Royal Canadian Regiment of the Canadian Army. He completed his paratrooper training at Camp Borden, Camp Brantford and Camp Shiloh.

In 1944, Joseph left high school to volunteer for the Navy, but was rejected because his birth certificate was registered with an incorrect first name. He walked across the street and enlisted in the Army.

Signing up as a paratrooper, Joseph injured his back on this 5th training jump, when he landed on a tree. He spent 6 months in Chorley Park Army hospital and left the army on a medical discharge, which he believes saved his life. A lthough his time in the army was short, Joseph grew up during that time and was proud to have the opportunity to serve.
