From innovative song writing projects to dementia-inclusive concerts, our partnership with non-profit Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall delivers joy and optimism to Amica residents and other Canadian seniors.
Now in its second year, the Lyrics and Legacies project pairs Amica with accomplished songwriters and musicians to turn residents’ life stories into original, professionally produced songs. The program helps residents celebrate what made them who they are and leaves a legacy for their loved ones.
Some of the most special aspects of the project are the uniqueness of the songs, and how each resident’s stories are brought to life in music. The final versions are heartfelt reflections of mutual discovery, life milestones and incredible storytelling. By the end of the process, each song represents an emotional journey, and a lasting bond has formed between resident and songwriter.

Accomplished songwriter Murray Foster wrote this song inspired by Amica resident Stan Klees’ contributions to Canadian music. Stan, co-founder of the Juno Awards and part of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, was affectionately known as the “Genius in Blue Jeans” among his peers. This upbeat country song reflects his personality and time in the music industry.
Jean Bache, whose love of music was inspired by her mother, is a top member of the Amica Bayview Gardens glee club. She created this song as a tribute to her late husband, Jack, and their love of sailing together. The song was co-written by Kate Suhr, who seamlessly injected nautical references along the way.
Ron Benwell wrote this song about his home in Rexdale, good times with his neighbours, and his one true love, Marlene. Ron is the lead vocalist and has been part of choirs for almost his entire life—including having performed at Massey Hall! The song was created with accomplished singer & songwriter Sarah Hiltz, and supporting musicians Nathan Gray, Devon Henderson and Raphael Roter.
Toni Lombardi created this piece with songwriter Lisa Patterson, inspired by a love of singing and opera while growing up in Italy. It features Juno-nominated vocalist Yvette Tollar, and a string trio comprised of Alex McMaster, Amanda Penner and Brielle Goheen.
Herb Williams created this piece with songwriter Katie DuTemple, inspired by his Grandpa Williams who said “to rest is to rust,” encouraging others to live life to the fullest whether you’re nine or ninety-one! Herb is featured on the piano, continuing his tradition of sharing his love and knowledge of music with fellow Amica residents.
